'Buying Cars Online?'

"Cars-How to buy a car?"

According to Consumer Reports, the buyer is in the driver seat today when it comes to buying a car.

What with the global glut of manufacturing, the ream of information coming from every corner, and the exposion of the internet, the buyer can make a great deal rather than accepting whatever the dealer offers.

Car buying websites, Autobytel and Autoweb.com "were easy to navigate" and got the job done.

Decide to lease or buy after you got the best deal possible, this way whatever you decide to do you will come out ahead.

Your purpose on visiting the showroom is not to buy a car that day, but to test drive the choices and get the final price.

Tell the car salesperson you won't be coming back unless the price given you is the lowest of all the bids you have gotten to date.

The new Consumer Reports Wholesale Price is a number below the invoice cost. It takes into account "hidden profit(s)" or "dealer holdback(s)".
A base from which you can negotiate.

1. Don't reveal whether you plan to buy or lease or how much you are willing to spend.
(Or your final cost given you will be just what the dealer wants you to buy it for irregardless of your budget.)

2. Only when you get a price do you want to reveal your plans.

3. Negotiate your old car trade-in separately.

4. Shop for the best financial term you can get.
Even check out your bank or credit union.

5. Avoid buying additional unnecessary "last-minute extras" such as undercoating or extended-warranty coverage.
Extended-warranty is never required by a bank.

6. Know your credit score before you shop for a car loan.
Cost $15 or less.

Experian, www.experian.com, 888-397-3742.
TransUnion, www.transunion.com, 800-888-4213.

If the dealer checks your credit report but says your credit score is lower than you know it is, in order for you to pay more, buy your car elsewhere, and report the deceptive dealer to the state attorney general's office.

7. Don't fall for the 0-0-0 deal!
0 Down-0 Interest-0 Payments for a whole year!
When the period of time is up, you will have to pay all the monthly payments that were delayed plus interest. It will cost more in the long run. Best to get a conventional loan.

8. The ad says "WE'LL PAY OFF YOUR LOAN!"
The ad suggests the dealer will assume your old debt.
But the debt doesn't simply disappear?
You will still have to pay all of it, including early-termination fees.
Best to stick with your current lease to avoid early-termination fees.
Best not to trade in a car if you are "upside down" or owe more than the car is worth.

9. Accept the dealer's finance offer only if it beats all others. Before driving off in the car, be sure you have an approved financing agreement. "Subject to financing approval" can be used by some dealers to raise your cost for the car just bought. If you don't agree to the higher cost, the dealer can report the car stolen.

10. Do not allow the dealership to run a credit check on you, if you plan to get financing elsewhere. Credit reports may be obtained without your permission only if you use dealer financing or write a personal check. Excessive numbers of credit checks can blemish your credit. Do not give the dealer your social security number or your driver's license (have no copy made before a test drive). If it's company policy to check your credit, leave. Make sure the credit-check authorization clause be stricken before you sign any papers.

11. If the dealer does not accept your online bank or credit union check in order to make you finance through the dealership, leave. It is just a ploy.

12. "WHAT CAN YOU AFFORD TO PAY PER MONTH" is another ploy. The dealer will make more money than if you had negotiated a purchase price first. Best to negotiate as if you are paying for the car with cash. Only after you agree on the sale price, calculate the monthly payments.

13. Do say often: "I'm not going to pay that." And be ready to walk out.
Put a line through these additional charges called "protection package, dealer prep". Items printed right on the form.
They include among others:
1. VIN etching on your windows.
2. Rustproofing.
3. Fabric protection.
4. Battery protection.
5. Tire protection.
Vehicle bodies and upholstery are typically already treated at the factory.
Some states require dealers to offer VIN etchings. So you can do-it-yourself with a $25 kit.
Dealer cost for the above items runs about $100.
Your cost will be $1000 or more.

14. Do not sign any contract that has on the front or back, or on a separate piece of paper, an mandatory arbitration clause where you will be giving away your right of redress should any serious problem occur. This binding arbitration used by many dealerships will require you to waive your right to sue, be in a class action lawsuit, or to appeal.
